About the Appraisal Institute
The Appraisal Institute is the result of the 1991 unification of the appraisal profession's two most respected organizations: The American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and the Society of Real Estate Appraisers. Although newly formed, the Appraisal Institute draws on more than 50 years of experience and fosters high standards in the field of real estate appraising.

Membership Designations
As the world's leading organization of professional real estate appraisers, the Appraisal Institute has general members who hold the MAI, SRPA, or SREA designation and residential appraisal members who hold the SRA or RM designation.

MAI
MAI
Held by appraisers who are experienced in the valuation of commercial, industrial, residential and other types of properties, and who advise clients on real estate investment decisions.
SRA
SRA
Held by appraisers who are experienced in the valuation of single-family homes, townhouses and residential income properties up to four units.
SRPA Held by appraisers who have experience in the valuation of commercial, industrial, residential and other types of properties.
SREA Held by members who are experienced in real estate valuation and analysis and advise clients on real estate investment decisions.
RM Held by members who are experienced in the valuation of single-family dwellings and in two-, three-, and four-unit residential properties.

Identified by their experience and knowledge of real estate valuation, these members adhere to a strictly enforced Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

Currently, the Appraisal Institute confers one general designation, the MAI, and one residential designation, SRA.

Holding an Appraisal Institute membership designation sets members apart from the rest of the appraisal community. Members holding Appraisal Institute designations are recognized as the most qualified in their fields.

In addition to designated members, the Appraisal Institute also has two other categories of membership: The Associate Member and the Affiliate Member.

  Associate Member
An Associate Member is an individual who has met the minimum Appraiser Qualifications Board (AQB) criteria for general or residential certification (or equivalent education and experience/competency) and is actively working toward an Appraisal Institute designation.

Affiliate Member
An Affiliate Member is an appraiser who does not wish to obtain a designation, or an appraiser trainee/para-appraiser, or a government or review appraiser. Also qualifying for this member category are attorneys, bankers, vendors, students, etc.
